Importing excel files into Access

For several months I have been getting the the following message:
The wizard is unable to access information in the file
‘C:\.....Presidents_list.xls’, Please check that the file exists and is in
the correct format.

I have previously been able to receive excel files from a client and import
them into an acccess.
 
If you are doing File\get external data\import then telling it to import an
excel file (on the little scroll bar) and it is not importing then you are
giving it the wrong file name, wrong location, or something. Or perhaps the
excel file is corrupted in some way. They usually import right in.
 
The files I receive are from the same client that everything worked.
The message is: Please check that the file exists and is in the correct
format.
The file exists. I don't thing the format has changed.
