Is there a way to import dns entries into a Win2k DNS
server? I know you can export the entries but do not see
import. That means you manually have to add them all if
your clients are not configured to dynamically update the
server?
Thanks.

No, you can't import records into DNS.
The export is only to export the list to a text file. You would still have
to make the entries manually. There is a script that can be used to export
and import entire zones but not individual records.
You can also let Win2k DHCP option 081 create and update the client IPs,
which is the recommended way to register clients that are not configured or
cannot dynamically update DNS.

Client registration is not required unless you have shares or shared
printers on those clients.

If going between tow W2k DNS servers, you can use Dean Wells', MVP, DNS Dump
utility

Dean Wells' DNSDump:

If NT4 to W2k, you can try a 3rd party:

Simple DNS Plus - Migrating Zone data from another DNS:
http://www.jhsoft.com/tutor/migrate.htm

But if you only have a couple zones, you can just use a simple zone
transfer, then make the secondary a primary when done. OR you can get
creative and use dnscmd from Microsoft (a command line utility in the
WIndows 2000 Support Tools on your CDROM).

But I'm a bit confused by this statement you made:

Manually add the zone info? If you have dynamic updates set, let it happen.
Then shut it off when done if you don't want additional clients to register.

I guess this part depends on your network and applications being used. It's
really not necessary in most cases to have clients registered. Not too many
apps out there require a client hostname in DNS. Take a university for
example, if there are 35,000 students with their own laptops, PDA, and other
things that require access, they would just clutter your records, so most
schools, in this example (and other examples), keep it turned off. Just
allow the DCs to register, is the important part.
