Importing data from external sources

I am having a problem importing excel data into an Access database. I am
working with both Excel and Access 97.

At first Access did not offer the options for importing either text or Excel
files. I used the regsvr32.exe file to register msexcl40.dll and
mstext40.dll. The registration was successful.

I loaded up the Access file and found the options for both Excel files and
text files; however, upon trying to import either file type I got a "There
is no object in this control" error message. I clicked Ok and the wizard
window was white except for the control buttons at the bottom of the form.

I've tried to add/remove features in Office97 for converting and
transferring files, but the add/remove program shows "Excel" and "Text"
options checked but disabled (I can't change the state) and on the right it
says "installed". I also ran "dataacc.exe" that comes with the value pack,
but it shows the same disabled options I just described.

I have installed other versions of office on this computer, so I removed any
other versions of Excel and Access, but I still can not import data. I've
read through previous entries in this news group and followed all the
instructions I could find, but still need help.

Thanks in advance!

I found some info on renaming the .dll files to .old, then rerunning the
dataacc.exe program that was in the value pack. This eliminated the
"installed" and disabled problem I described previously. However, when I
tried to do another import the wizard control comes up blank (except for the
"next", "cancel", and "finish" command buttons at the bottom of the form)
and I still get the "There is no object in this control." message and the
import never happens.
It's as if the wizard is trying to load an installed component that has
become corrupt.
Do you know of any links that might help me import the data without using
the msexcel, or mstext DLL's and the import wizard?

Much appreciated!

I reinstalled Office97 -which really gave me a fit because it keeps telling
me it is an upgrade when the disk clearly states it is the full product, and
I've installed from the same disk for several years- and the problem went
away. Had I not had so much trouble working the installation disk I would
have done this a lot sooner. The install wizard kept saying it couldn't find
any required files to allow for the update. I pointed the wizard to the CD
and it found the file/s it wanted and allowed the install to proceed.

Thanks for your help.
