importing data from excel

Apologies in advance as this is a mixed query about using excel to import da
ta into Outlook.

I want to create a new distribution list of 500 or so emails in Outlook (leg
itimate use, I'm not a spammer!).

Problem is I do not want to enter each one as a contact first so they do not
yet appear in the list to select for adding to a DL.

My solution was to create a new contacts folder in Outlook and export this b
lank file to excel.

I then populates the email address and email alias fields with my 500 email
addresses. Also populated the emailtype field with value 'SMTP' and the ca
tergories field so that I can merge with my main contacts at some point and
still identify these email addresses.

I then try to import this back into the new balnk contacts folder and Outloo
k goes through the motions but nothing is copied to my new folder.

Might anyone here know what I am doing wrong? I am sure that this should wo
rk.
