Importing data from Excel 2002 file

I have a database with a table set up and am trying to
import the data from an Excel 2002 spreadsheet. The
fields are labeled correctly and the formats are set.
When I try to import the data, the message I get is "An
error occurred trying to import file.....The file was not
imported." I can import the data into a new table and it
works fine but I already have the other table set up how I
want it to be. I have double-checked everything I can
think of -- anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
 
Not sure but I always import to a new table anyway.
Then I write queries to move the data from the temp table to the real table.
(The queries can format data and massage the raw data so it "fits" the real
table.)
