importing asf into movie maker

i used the import feature in movie maker and this is the result of a failed import
"file.ASF cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."
even media player9 fails to opens this file
 
I think .asf is just a wrapper kind of like .avi and you can stuff any codec
in there

I don't think MM could open anything that WMP can't play
