imported pictures don't playback, won't create movie

I've reinstalled, done a system restore, etc. etc.

The projects I created last month will play in Movie Maker II, and the video and still pictures I imported last month can be used in projects; but I can't use anything I've imported today. On playback I get a black screen for the new pictures, but I can see the older ones, and the video transitions work. I've tried .bmp, .jpg, and .gif files. When I try to save the movie to the hard drive, the program tells me it can't.

I'm stuck. I really like Movie Maker 2 and was preparing to do a family project, but now I can't.
 
Can you do a system restore and go back a month?
