Office XP

I've imported a list of contacts from Outlook, and
there's a ' in front of every cell with data, although
it's not visible in the spreadsheet. Only in the Formula
Bar. I'm curious what that is, and can I remove it from
the Excel spreadsheet?

Thanks.

Hi Doug!

Enter any text into a cell and you'll see that there's a ' at extreme
left in the formula bar.

It's a text indicator with the ' being indicator for format left
aligned.

For manually entered text you can change to " for right aligned and ^
for centred.

You'll find using =LEN(A1) that it isn't counted as part of the
string.

AFAIK you can't remove it if the contents are a string.

Right click in an*empty* cell and choose "Copy".
Then select all the cells you wish to change.
Right click in this selection and choose "PasteSpecial".
Then click "Add", then <OK>.

Your text will become text without the apostrophe, and your numerical text
will become true numbers, with the ability to be used in calculations.

Hi RD!

Doh!! That stuff on " and ^ is an old Lotus thing. Interesting is that if
you do prefix an entry with ^ or " or a lot of other characters the '
doesn't appear in the formula bar.

Thanks for the query. Blame it on Wednesday.

I'm afraid I can't do that ... it's only Tuesday here.<g>

Hi RD!

Well watch out for tomorrow then! But seriously, it's a good system of
quality checks that we look out for one another.
