While viewing the calendar there are 3 smaller calendars on the left for the
previous, current, and next months. Events (perhaps those that you flag as
important) should highlight that date on the mini calender. Then regardless
of whether you are using the daily, 7 day, or month view, you could see that
there is an important event comming up on that mini calendar. You could then
click on that date to see what it is.

Do you know how? Appointments show up as bold, but I would like to see my
events such as birthdays and anniversaries on the mini calendar. They could
be a color or something to differentiate them from appointments.

The mini-calendar does not support colors. My birthdays and other
non-holiday events show fine on my date navigator and mini-calendar.
