Win XP/ Office pro 2003

I have been importing contacts from Excel in batches for a few weeks now
(Office Pro 2003/Win XP). The imports have been going okay up until now when
I am trying to import my 6th batch (approx 120 names).

It will not import. (I did go into the excel file and do the
Insert/name/define/and added a name other than one of the column names) When
I try to import it just sits there running for well over 10/15 minutes as if
it is importing. Then I get an error telling me Outlook 2003 has encountered
an error and needs to shut down. I send the report to MS.

The other thing I noticed (I have tried to import this batch multiple times
to the same contact folder which is empty - (or looks like it anyway? I
import to that file and then copy/paste the contacts to the main db once I
know it has imported okay to the blank contact folder) is that while it is
importing (or trying) it shows the items on the bottom left shows as 282862!
yikes!

If that is the case where are the items? I have checked the view/arrange
by/current view/customize and there are no filters on. I have tried a
detect/repair to no avail and I have tried rebooting my computer and the
server.

fyi - when I go into tools/mailbox cleanup it shows that my contacts folder
size is 13967kb and the total size of my outlook is 64075kb. I have deleted
all of my sent files and emptied my deleted folder - fyi

any suggestions/assistance will be more than appreciated! :-)

What was there any other error aside from the generic "have to shut down
etc........."?

Have you tried runing Scanpst on your PST file that you're using to see if
there are any issues reported? (sounds like it's having a structural issue
with the PST file because if it was simply a data issue, you're generally
just get a MAPI faliure message). Having said that, would be a good idea to
make sure that there are no obscure data issues inside this particular
batch. Quickest way to do that is try and import this file on another
machine if you can (really doesn't matter what version of Outlook you use
for this particular exercise if it's in the Outlook 2000 family).

Also, does the same issue exist if you save the file in CSV format and
import that versus Excel in the off chance you have a corrupt Excel file?
(and yes we've run across that too - nothing is visibly wrong when you open
the file but the named ranges do not report correctly when pulling the named
range info programmatically). This would be the easiest and quickest thing
to try right off the bat.

If the problem still exists after the above items - create a brand new PST
file and import to that to ensure there are no issues remaining with your
original PST file.

Failing all of the above - do a complete re-install of Office but my guess
is that the problem will show itself in one of the items mentioned.
