Import Text File - after SP3

Mike M.

After installing Office XP SP3, we are seeing a problem with importing text into Access 2002.

We can import a text file, but during the process, we can not rename any of the field names (other than the first one) if we select "First Row Contains Field Names". The only name that changes is the first field name. This works like it is supposed to if we go back to Office XP SP2.

These are Windows XP SP1 systems.

Can I get someone with SP3 to try this for me and let me know if we are the only ones seeing this? It will only take a couple of minutes.

Make a tab delimited text file for importing.
Create a new database and go to "File"\"Get External Data"\"Import..."
Accept the default (Delimited) and hit Next
Check the "First Row Contains Field Names" checkbox and click Next
Accept the default ("In a New Table") and click Next
NOW... Try to rename each of those field names to something different.

Does anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike McGuire

c'mon... it can't be that hard to try...
Do I need to insert a quarter in the floppy drive?

This is a known bug in A2003.
I guess the SP introduced the new behavior.
Or else you have A2003 installed on the same PC and it is overriding the A2002 behavior.
(.dll hell still exists.)

If you have A2002 and A2003 on the same PC then try finding a PC with only A2002 and update it with the Sp after testing that it works correctly pre-SP and then test Post-SP.

Does it work?

C'mon - it should only take a few minutes! <g>

Thanks for the reply Joe. We don't have 2003 installed on these. This just started happening after A2002 SP3. Do you know off hand which dell might be causing this behavior? If not, I could probably find out, it would just take me a little while.

Thanks...

Oh yeah.... how do I get these quarters out of my floppy drive? ;)

Sorry, the spell check changed "dll" to "dell" in that last post. The question should read... Do you know off hand which DLL might be causing this behavior?

Hey - I didn't get any quarters!

When people "lose" their ability to import certain types of files I tell them to do the following.
I assume these are the "dells" you are looking for.

Try re-registering the dll files like this:
Start Run
regsvr32 msexcl35.dll
regsvr32 msxbse35.dll
regsvr32 mspdox35.dll
regsvr32 mstext35.dll

Use 40 instead of 35 for A2K and 2002.

I was able to solve the problem by replacing the SP3 version of ACCWIZ.DLL (located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10) with the SP2 version.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, I am having the exact same issue after installing
Office XP 2003 -- have you had any luck yet?
