Import PST to new computer?

OL2002, WinXP -------------------
I exported the OL2002 PST file and saved to a CD. I want to import it into
the new computer also using OL2002. ---- HERE'S THE PROBLEM: When I did
this a couple of years ago I ended up with two Personal Folders, thereby
using twice the space needed. I currently have 20 - 30 emails in my Inbox
on the new computer, and over 1,000 in the PST file I want to import. How
do I import the PST, have it merge with the 20 - 30 new emails, and NOT end
up with two Personal Folders?

Thanks,

By not importing. And now you see why.
Just open the PST file and copy what you want from it or reuse it as the
default for your new installation.

Thanks, but I've run into unknown hurdles:

1. In OL2002, I did File/Open/Outlook Data File, then pointed to the file
on the CD. I then got a message: "access denied, you do not have permission
required to access the file." But of course I have permission; it's my
file, created by me, on my computer and all I want to do is get the contents
into OL2002 on my new computer. One problem is that the file is listed as
an Office Data File, but OL2002 only has an option for opening an Outlook
Data File.

2. If there's a way for me to open the PST file on the CD, what am I going
to see, and what do I need to know to get the emails from the Inbox copied
into the new Inbox folder, the Sent emails into the new Sent folder, and get
the various folders and their contents copied into my new Personal Folder?

Thanks,

You pointed to a file on a CD? That's not an "unknown hurdle." You can't
open a file on a CD. Those files have read only attributes. You must move
the file to a hard drive and remove the read only attribute.

No, I exported to the default Outlook folder in WinXP, then copied it to the

No, Outlook was open. I just now did another export of the PST file to the
default location -- Documents and Settings/default/Application
Data/Microsoft/Outlook/backup3-3-05.pst. I then copied it to a CD while OL
was still open. I then copied it from that CD to the desktop of the new
computer. I then Opened OL2002, clicked Outlook Today, then clicked
File/Open and chose the only option, "Outlook Data File." I then choose the
Desktop folder and clicked on "backup3-3-05.pst." I'm then immediately
thrown back to Outlook where nothing has happened.

The file saved is "backup3-3-05.pst." Outlook is looking for an "Outlook
Data File," but Properties of the backup pst file reads "Office Data File."
The difference in the nomenclature between "Outlook Data" and "Office Data"
may be insignificant, because OL2002 (in both cases) is part of the same
Office XP Pro.

Any thoughts?

Fixed. The PST file was perfectly fine. It did indeed create a separate
Personal Folder, just what I didn't want it to do. After an hour on the
phone with Microsoft/India in two separate sessions, we finally got the two
Personal Folders merged. Doing a file IMPORT was the way to do it.

In case anyone else is following this thread: If you have more than one
Personal Folder showing in the Folder List (View/Folder List), first, you
have to determine which Personal Folder offers the option to "Close" after
right-clicking on it. You then Tools/Accounts/E-mail Accounts/View or
Change, then in the drop-down box choose the Personal Folder that does NOT
offer a "Close" option and do the OKs and Finishes to keep the choice. Then
File/Import that PST file that does offer the "Close" option. After that
file has been completely imported, go back to the Folder List, right-click
on that Personal Folder and "Close" it. You will now have imported a PST
file from another computer and merged it with the new default Personal
Folder. While you're doing all of that, make sure that you choose the
correct duplicate/no duplicate choices.

Actually the correct answers are:
1. Never export/import a PST file.
2. If you import a PST file and end up with 2 Personal Folders files, your
profile is corrupt. Create a new profile.
