Import or Post?

I will be taking many trips this year and would rather not use GoToMyPC to
access my Outlook files. I have Outllook on both my PC and laptop. Is there
a way to sync or import all of contacts, email messages, tasks, etc. from my
PC to my laptop?

My intent is to "update" my laptop before a trip with all of the current
data from the PC; then "update" the PC with the new data from the laptop upon
my return.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

You can simply copy the pst-file from your main computer to your laptop and
connect to it via;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

Another way to go would be to use a Hosted Exchange solution. Then
everything is stored server side and you can access your email via Outlook
on either machine and even via OWA in a browser. Any changes you make via
either access will be automatically replicated to your clients when you
connect again. As Outlook caches your mailbox, you can also access it while
being off-line.

Your ISP could be offering this solution already or your company (if this is
for a corporate mailbox). There are many other providers for this as well.

You would never use import for this. Proper methods for transferring Outlook
data are posted here daily. Let us know if you can't read the group so we
can repost them for you.

Roady,
Thanks. Copying the .pst file seems very simple and along the lines of what
I was looking for. To be clear, when you say to 'Copy', I can simply copy
onto my flash drive, then insert flash drive into laptop, and paste there;
then reverse the process when I return from said trip. Is this correct?

Also, your post brings another question. You mention 'OWA', what is that?
Then, can you recommend a post or thread where I can learn about Hosted
Exchange? As simple as copy-paste is, if I can access my the same data on
either machine, with as little work as possible on my part, that would be
fantastic. It would be an even greater benefit for my wife, who travels more
and is less tech savvy than me. Thanks again.

Russ,
I can, in fact, read the group; I come quite frequently for the incredible
technical assistance these forums provide. I posted my question because I
was not sure of what the procedure was I was looking for (I couldn't even
title my post correctly, DOH!). No need to repost, but if you could direct
me to the correct forum, thread or search, I would be very grateful

Thanks for your assistance now, the many times I have read your posts in the
past, and the many times I am sure I will read your posts in the future.

Happy to. I hate to keep posting the same information over and over again,
but I know searching these groups can be difficult. For future reference, I
never use any of Microsoft's interfaces to these groups for searching. They
are abysmal. I use a Google search for these groups:
http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=usenet=microsoft.public.outlook

This should cover the information you need:
The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the
mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Note that some of the information on the Microsoft page is outdated and
contains errors, particularly when applied to Outlook 2003 or 2007.
Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default location to
connect it to your profile. Doing so will often corrupt your Outlook
profile. Copy it
anywhere BUT the default location and then open it within your Outlook
profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to transfer
Outlook data. That has never been sound advice, but the process has become
too deeply flawed to be of any use.
