i have an access 2002 database which imports (using vba code) files
downloaded from a website. they used to be save as .txt files, they are now
in .csv format. the problem is they have changed the file layout and when i
go into import wizard and click advanced no field names are showing only
field?. I have tried doing a manual import of the file using another table
name but it doesn't appear to save the import specification either. Can
anyone help

Hi Dennis,

Does the first line of the CSV file contain the field names? If so,
setting the appropriate option in TransferText should make the names
appear in the Advanced dialog of the wizard. If not, you can just type
the names you want into the dialog.

I have a feeling at the back of my mind that the original version of
Access 2002 had a bug somewhere in the import specifications, and that
this was fixed by a service pack. Have you installed the Office XP
service packs?

Thanks John that helped a lot I did find the problem in the end. We had 2
similiar databases the original one I was trying to change last week would
not let me use the specification. Today I am at another site that has almost
the same database (with slight modifications) and I was able to create a new
specification for the new file which is working fine now. Thanks
Dennis
