I'm having no success importing my messages from XP to Vista's Windows Live
Mail. I try to import, select folders, and they seem to copy...but don't
display at all. A new folder appears at the bottom of the pane that's
labelled as imported, but that folder is empty. Is there a trick to this I'm
missing?

Vista is running as a dual boot system. The old C: drive has XP. I can't use
import sttings from old computer as this is the SAME computer (let's hope
they fix that problem, too)

Thanks in advance..

Yes, I did bother to check other threads. I also checked other newsgroups. I
successfully imported my mails from every OS since Win98...but the import on
Vista Live mail DOES NOT work for me.

I tried copying the dbx folders to Vista desktop, making sure they are not
read only. The import seems to work, but the messages don't show.

Try not to be so condescending when people ask for advice....no offense
intended, but some us us do look before we hit the newsgroups.

What version of Vista are you running? The newest release imports properly
(assuming you copied the file folders.dbx from the old message store
folder). If you are dual booting, you can point it to the old message store
folder (which most likely is on D:\ since Vista insists that it is installed
on C:\ even when a dual boot places it on another drive).

An alternate method would be to open the folders in Outlook Express and
drag/drop all the messages in them to similar named folders you create on
your Desktop where they will be saved as EML files. Copy those folders with
the EML files to your Vista machine and drag/drop them into the Message
Header list in the appropriate folder in Windows Mail (Vista).

But, if you did not include the original folders.dbx from your Outlook
Express install, then an import using the File/Import/Messages option in
Windows Mail will fail since that file is required to direct messages to
appropriate folders.

Hi Jim..
I'm running Vista RC1 Build 5600. I am dual booting, and already tried
pointing to file on (renamed) D;...no success. It appears to transfer and
that files are copying, but nothing is copied. I then tried unsuccessfully
to copy the folder containing all the OE dbx files to the Vista desktop in a
renamed folder. I made sure all files were not marked read-only, and
attempted to import. The original folders.dbx is present. Same thing
happened. Live Mail seems to copy the dbx files, even showing the names of
the folders, but nothing appears under mail folders. Next option is to drag
and drop, but that is a pain! It shouldn't require this many steps to import
the files.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Are you talking about Windows Mail for Vista, or Windows Live Mail? They
are different programs.

I suspect the import was flawed in 5600 and is working now in 5744 (RC2) for
Windows Mail in Vista, which is what this NG is for.

Sorry, Steve. I put in the first header that it was for Live Mail. I didn't
realize this group was only for Mail. Is there a group for Live Mail?
(Confusing that Vista would have 2 different mails???)

The newsgroup for Windows Live Mail Desktop is this:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

And sorry, I also thought you were asking about Windows Mail in Vista. WLMD
has its own newsgroup to help cut down on confusion, and you should post
there and advise the "build" number of WLMD- Beta that you are using. Since
it is an early beta, I would expect that significant bugs will remain for
some time (and the import is one of them) although I've had good luck
importing using WLMD-Beta build 1083.

Ok, thanks all for the help...

Not your fault. We asked they change the name from Outlook Express as it
was confusing with Outlook. Now they stupidly add these other programs with
the same name and expect people to differentiate from them somehow.

The people who came up with the stupid names obviously don't have to support
the products.

It IS very confusing! As a follow-up, I did successfully import all old
messages into Mail. I'm still having no luck with Vista Live Mail Desktop.
