Import by "mapping" data to existing table

Sorry, put this in wrong area before.

This must be a common issue, but I'm stumped. I have
written a trial 3-table relational database in Access
with queries and reports. Now I want to "map" existing
data from an ASCII source (mainframe pullfile). The
other databases I use have a simple "Import" with mapping
data function.

In Access, when I "Import" the data I end up with a new
table! This is unacceptable, because my reports,
queries, etc. don't work, of course, on the new table.

I can find no reference anywhere to "mapping data" into
an existing table.

Can anyone please help??? A simple import does NOT work.

Thank you
Fred

What I would do is Link the table into my database (rather than Import),
then create an Append query to copy the data from the new source into the
existing tables. In the Append query, you can map fields.

Roger, thank you. I'm going to give that a try. One
problem is that I need to import (or append) different
data every month or so. I am a bank examiner (self
employed), and each of the 15 small banks I examine have
different mainframe or support systems. The data comes
in varied format, and I always have to parse it in Excel
first. I am afraid of writing anything specific into my
database because the data looks different every time.

BTW, I've used three databases, Filemaker Pro, Approach,
and Alpha Five, and Access is by far, without a doubt the
most obscure, difficult, unfriendly one I have used!!
Every time I figure out one thing, I am presented with
another problem. I'm very close to just moving on with
Filemaker Pro.

Fred (sorry to vent on such a decent guy).

Hi Fred
Boy do I ever feel your pain. I am an expert in Alpha (without ever having to learn code - imagine that!) and am being forced to learn Access...NOT because of any viable reason other than "everyone uses it"...well, didn't "everyone" use the horse/buggy before the car was invented?

Anyway, why in the world would you want to go to Access when you can use Alpha 5 so much more effortlessly/efficiently/accurately...not to mention all the Genies that guide you along the way. And the Alpha Message Board is by far much more friendly AND a higher caliber class of people (i.e. no offending posts like I've seen on this message board - the 4-letter word one's, for instance)

PS - If there were a way to invite you to send me a personal email without actually publishing my email account on this thread, I'd invite you to do so...but of course there's another area to "study" that will probably lead to 10,000 more areas to study, which will probably mean more books to buy, more supporting software, thousands of pages to read and regurgitate..

Like I said, I feel your pain! Good luck to you ;
