Hi:

Trying to import contact info (including real world addresses and phone numbers, etc.) from the Address Book one finds in Word (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\Administrator.wab - this is the only WAB I can find on my system) into the Outlook Contacts.

File/Import and Export - Import from another program or file - Personal Address Book - yields error message:

"An error occurred while importing or exporting and the import/export was terminated. MAPI error 0X800004005 was reported. Please try to import/export again later."

More data:

The path to the wab is from Start/Search for *.wab - it's the only one on my system. But when trying to import with Outlook, it seems to only allow me to grab .pab files, is that what I want? I typed in the .wab path to try to get it to go, but it did not work.

What are the proper steps for accomplishing this?

Thanks

A .WAB file is used by Outlook Express. Are you sure this is the only file
you have that contains addresses and/or contact info? Is this the first
time you're using Outlook?

Thanks for the prompt reply

Yes, it is a .wab - it's a 6 MB file, and once located via Search, doubleclicking it opens the address book. It is the one accessed in Word, for whatever reason.

No, I have never used Outlook Express on this machine

But, however it got there, it does indeed appear to be a .wab book; so ... how does one move .wab entries into Outlook contacts, in at least a semi automated fashion? I've got over 1000 to move. Following the steps that appear to be available through the menus fails. If this is an OE address book, do I have to export from it in some specific format?

To try this, I just DID export it as a .wab file, and then typed that path into the Import box from Outlook, but got the same error message

Should I reinstall Office and try again? Or am I missing something

Thank

Thanks

Oh - one more data point --- when in Outlook, Tools/Address Book brings up the Outlook Contacts Address Book, and the Import and Export options under File are grayed out - why is this

The OE Address Book where my addresses are currently residing (they were imported there from WordPerfect 8 Address Book, mapping fields across successfully) has an entries called "Shared Contacts" and "Main Identity's Contacts", which is where my info resides now. In this OE Address Book, Tools/Options gives the choice of sharing or not sharing data -- the default appears to be not sharing, and it then saves data as .wab. I tried the other option, and all my contacts were suddenly undisplayed, and then the Address Book in Word (OE Address Book, it seems) linked to the (empty) Outlook Contacts folder. I switched that option back to "do not share", and my contacts reappered

Help

Thank

Note that I asked if you had used OUTLOOK previously...not Outlook Express.
:-) I was trying to find out if you might possibly have any Outlook files
on your machine that would contain contact information. But, no big deal.

I don't think you will be able to import from the .WAB file directly -- you
will need to open Outlook Express, import the .WAB into OE using File |
Import | Address Book, and then go back to Outlook and use File | Import and
Export | Import Internet Mail and Addresses, then choose Outlook Express in
the list and check only the Import Addresses box.

You're really confusing me now...your original reply to me said you had not
used Outlook Express on that machine, but now you say you're using it. If
you have addresses in Outlook Express, they're stored in a .WAB, which is
probably the file you found before.

If you choose to share your contact data between Outlook and Outlook
Express, the contacts will reside in Outlook, not OE. Outlook's Contacts
are stored in the main Outlook file, which has a .PST extension (this file
also stores mail, appointments, tasks, notes, journal items, etc.) The
Outlook Address Book is not a separate entity, but just a different view of
the contents of your Contacts folder(s). If you have more than one Contacts
folder, you can choose which ones you want to appear when you open the
Address Book. (Perhaps you have a list of contacts with no e-mail address,
so you wouldn't need those to appear when addressing a new message.) If you
were going to import to or export from your Contacts folders, you wouldn't
do it through the Outlook Address Book -- you'd do it using the
Import/Export wizard on Outlook's main File menu.

My previous reply told you how to export your contact data from OE into
Outlook. I recommend you do that if you are going to use Outlook, and then
you can decide if you need to share the contacts with Outlook Express or
not.
