You're right. Just because I noticed the problem after I
had begun to use Outlook doesn't mean that initializing
my use caused the problem. It had probably been several
days since I last used my Address Book in OE. So it could
have been erased before I started using Outlook and I
hadn't noticed. That said, I can't think of what I might
have done to erase the *.wab file.
There is only one other user of OE here. She does not
use Ootlookl here although she uses it at work. Her
Address Book is also gone. ?? Both of us have used OE
for years, and have worked with computers for decades.
Doesn't mean that we don't do Boo Boos. I'm assuming that
my migration to Outlook would involve only my OE files
and not any other OE user's files. If that's correct
then how did her Address Book get erased?
Only two other users, One is the nine year old grandson
and his buddy. But their usage, as far as I know, is
limited to online games with IE. The other is a son who
sometimes uses the Internet when he is here. For none of
thee can I think of what in their normal usage could have
erased the *.wab files.
All this is just thinking out loud in writing. Back to
you questions.
The only Contact file was in OE. Is it called that in
OE? I thought that it was called Address Book. I assume
that that would be the .wab file. The Contact file in
Outlook was never previously used and it's still empty.
Incidentally what's its extension?
Thanks again.
Wouldn't it be nice, at least for people with my skills,
if there buletin boads had a spell check!

Not without knowing where your Contacts actually resided before you
installed Outlook. Never have I seen installing Outlook remove a *.wab file.
It might reset the connection for the OE's address book from the WAB file to
your Outlook Contacts Folder, but you should still turn up the WAB file with
a search for *.wab on your hard drive. There must be more to this story. Do
you have more than one user profile on this PC? Is your Contacts Folder in
Outlook empty?

Mail Support mode is "Internet Mail Only - Security
Update" as you suspected.
Changed the sharing option in OE but the old Address Book
contents did not reappear in OE. Did a search of the C:
drive for wab which found a number of address book
related files; a couple of .exe, several .dll, some help
files .hlp and .chw and a OEWABlog.txt.
Ah ignorance has a price! I though that I followed the
instructions carefully when initializing Outlook and I
assumed that the data flow would be from Outlook Express
to Outlook. It was for the mail files. Any clues as to
what I did wrong?
I guess I now have the job of reconstructing that list of
addresses. #!@#@@!
Thanks for your help

Since this is Outlook 2000, you'll need to provide your
mail support mode as
well (line 2 of Help | About if you don't know).
Most likely you installed in Internet Mail Only mode,
which thenconfigured
Outlook Express to share Outlook's Contacts (of which
you have none) instead
of its own Contact store (the WAB). You can turn off
that sharing option by
opening the Address book in OE, Tools > Options... and
see if your OE
Contacts reappear. If they do, you can just import them
into Outlook.

Outlook 2000 SP-3
Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123
Outlook had been previously installed from the CD but
we
had never used it.
Wanting the features of Outlook I started to use it.
In
doing so I received the message that I needed to insert
the CD with Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium. I had
to
go out so left the system in that state.
When I returned those messages were gone and it seemed
ready to continue with the installation. I don't now
remember the sequence of steps but they asked for
information about my ISP account, did I want to move
files etc. and appeared to complete.
When I opened Outlook all my mail folders and their
contents where there. I was able to receive mail. It
asked whether I wanted Outlook to be my mail handler
(that may not be the exact wording)to which I answerd
yes. Only when I went to send an email did I see that
there were no Contacts. I looked at Outlook Express
Address Book and found all email addresses were
missing.
I'm not sure whether this is an Outlook or an Outlook
Express problem.
There is another user of this machine. Would my
starting
to use Outlook affect their usage of Outlook Express?
Should I ask that question as a separate post?

Post all relevant Outlook and OE versions. Elaborate
on "We started using
Outlook..."
What did you do to start using Outlook? Install it?
Open
it for the first
time? How exactly did this migration occur?

We started using Outlook. Seems to be working
correctly. One problem. Our Address Book was not
imported from Outlook Express although all other
files
seem to have been. Worese my address book has
disapeared
from Express. I'm reasonably sure that it was there
befor the migration
