Hi,

I have windows 2000 server based environment. some of my clients are windows
98 and some are windows 2000 and some are windows xp.
Windows 2000 and windows xp no problem.
But how to get group policy get going on windows 98 pcs.

Help would be really appreciated.

Kind Regards,
arco.

Arco,

Simply put - you can not. GPOs do not apply to WINNT and WIN9x clients.
You can install the DSClient extensions on them so that these client systems
can understand a very few AD-related things ( like in which 'Site' they are
located ) but unfortunately GPOs is not one of them. You are pretty much
stuck with the old-style System Policies ( with poledit ).

You can't apply Group Policies to Win95/98 machines even
if they're in an AD domain. The Directory services client
when installed on 95/98 only gives those clients the
ability to browse AD.

You'll need to upgrade them to 2000 or xp.

Any other way? Any third-party tool.
Basically I have to do the following:
1. Folder Re-direction.
2. Some restrictions (should not be able to change important settings like
computer name, ip, date, etc)

Thanks in advance.

Arco,

It is simply not possible with 'down-level' clients. Upgrade to WIN2000 or
WINXP Pro would be my suggestion!

However, I am not sure that you need GPOs to do what you are trying to so.
Granted, it is easier to make the setting in one place and let that affect
every machine. If upgrading to WIN2000 or WINXP ( and I would suggest that
you do wipe and load with the full OEM/Retail version CD instead of
purchasing the WIN2000 Upgrade or WINXP Upgrade CD ) is not in the budget
then consider this:

1) you can move the 'My Documents' folder by right-clicking it, selecting
"Properties" and then selecting "Move..." and supplying the path to the
netwoek location...
2) in a WIN98 system there is no real way that I know to prevent this. This
is one of the many reasons why WIN98 is not an appropriate OS for a
corporate environment. If you had WIN2000 or WINXP all you would do is make
sure that each domain user account object is not a member of the local
Administrators group and a lot of things are not 'available'. However, the
list is long so you might want to look in to it...

I haven't used this software in the past, but I have checked out the
demos of the software... check this link out and see if it might help
you solve your problem with pre-XP/2000 machines...

Good luck.

The Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 318753: HOW TO: Create a System Policy Setting in Windows 2000 describes how to create policies for down-level client computers. It goes into detail on how to install Poledit on Win98 which you can then use to create a policy (this is the same tool that was used in Win95 to create policies to be run from a NT4 server for example). Once completed, copy the file created in Poledit (usually called config.pol) to the netlogon share on the 2000 server. Win95/98 clients look by default to this share when they are configured as Domain clients. It works well - we have used it. The only problem is that there are fairly limited options available to configure. There is admittedly no "Folder Redirection" - I am also wanting to find out how to do this.
