IMAP - Retreiving - Slow

I use mailwasher and outlook xp for my email.
I have mailwasher download my mail first and then i get rid of the
spam.
A couple times a day, i open outlook xp, and my mail servers i set up
for IMAP (opposed to POP)
Sometimes it takes a minute or two to download the files/emails before
they appear in my mailbox. Is there a reason it is so slow (using
cable modem).
 
No fix?

I see similar, irregular, problems with OL2003 (Beta).... sometimes IMAP
downloads are very quick, other times I might as well go get coffee ! On a
1.5mbps DSL connection.
Accessing the IMAP server via a webmail solution is consistant with
performance
