I would like to image my C: drive to my external drive, which has 3
times the

capacity.

Will the typical software allow me to image to a special directory on
the external

drive, or do I have to make a partition on the external drive?

I'm using Vista Home Premium.

No, you only need that when you are writing the image to the drive you are imaging.

Nope, the imager writes a file on the external drive.

If by 'typical software' you mean Vista'a backup program, there is no
system imaging backup capability with your version of Vista. A decent
third-party software tool, such as Acronis True Image Home Edition, will do
what you want i.e. create image backups as files on your external drive.
