I have Outlook 2003 on my laptop. When I am connected to my network and
download my POP3 mail I can see the images in the HTML messages, however
when I disconnect from the network and view the messages the images have
gone!!!

I have set the image download option to download the entire message and view
the images but that hasn't helped. It's strange because if I reconnect the
laptop to the Web all the images\banners etc reappear!

Any ideas?

Many messages include only a link to web based content, not the actual
image. In those cases Outlook has nothing to download and you won't see an
image unless you're connected. Sounds like normal behavior.

Thanks for that Russ, however it definitely removes all the images from HTML emails, even the banner ads disappear! If I were to download my mail then look at it offline I couldn't read half of it, surely that isn't right

How come I could read them offline with Office 2000\XP but not Office 2003?

Depends. What are your Automatic Picture Download Settings?

I have unchecked both "Don't download pictures or other content automatically..." and "Warn me before downloading content..."

I have even added the user \ domain to my safe recipients list.

Well I can't test this because I'm never offline and I never allow download
of pictures. But I'm sure this behavior has changed in Outlook 2003. That's
one of Outlook 2003's biggest advantages.

I understand the principle behind not automatically downloading images in emails, but if you specifically tell Outlook to download the images, especially if you receive a lot of newsletters etc that are in HTML format. How are you supposed to be able to refer to them on your laptop when you're not connected to the Internet? There must be a way to tell Outlook 03 to cache the images for offline viewing?

Web based content is not stored in the message, it is only displayed unless
you edit, forward or reply to the message. Can't you just save the message
if you want to save the images?

Whilst I agree with your opinion, I don't think the HTML emails I am talking about are Web based. They are simply emails in HTML format. Some are from very non technical companies. All I want to do is refer to my past emails in my inbox off line when I'm on the road. All was fine with every other version of Office before 2003. Strange.

It is strange. I can't imagine why you can't view HTML mail with images
embedded. What are your permissions set to? Have you enabled to View in
Internet Zone?

I am logged in with Admin rights so that can't be it. I have briefly looked at the Zones but not in any great detail. What do you suggest I enable? I can't see anything like "view" in there.
