Image viewer similar to ACDSee

In Freeware, I'd guess the closest is Irfanview. There may be others

But ACDSee does so much, I doubt that you'll find a single freeware title
that does everything ACDsee does. (Some would say ACDSee does too much and
has now become so complex that it is impossible for them to create a new
version that is close to being bug free - The latest, V6, will require at
least 2 patches, possibly 3 to become completely stable and as good as V5 -
though I don't want to do without it!)

You'll need to acquire a suite of apps I suspect. But that's not all bad,
you can pick the best of breed.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Version: 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4

Unfortunately, nothing is even close.

That said, the closest I have found so far is Cam2PC. It's bloated, but if
you have a fast computer, it's just as snappy as ACDSee at toggling through
a folder of large pictures at full screen. Pressing the ESC key once exits,
just like ACDSee.

Thankyou Bob and JunkMonkey.

Some more help please.
I have an early version of ACDSee ( v3.0 )
This has been reporting filepage errors.
I have tried a fix for this which is to delete
the two files in C:\Program Files\ACD\ACDSee
These are:
ImageDB.ddf.....this had grown quite large ( 600MB )
ImageDB.dtf
After restarting ACDSee these two files are recreated
but are much smaller.

At the moment ACDSee is working OK
What is the function of these two files?

Tranz,

Bear in mind that I have never used V3, my knowledge is based on my use of
ACDSee V5 and V6. Which, as I understand it, is significantly different
internally from V3. You can find V3 users in the forums at DPReview.com.
(An excellent source of general digital photo knowledge, I might add, and
it's FREE!) There is a subset of ACDSee users who claim V3 was the last
GOOD version and have no intention of upgrading they are a vocal subset at
DPReview (editorial comment on my part)

That being said, I suspect these files are the files that contain the data
definition file (the .ddf) and the thumbnail database (dtf). I also suspect
that over the years these database files got very large and somewhat
disorganized to the point that ACDSee couldn't use them any more. When you
deleted them, and then restarted ACDSee, ACDSee recreated them. You might
have noticed that time, ACDSee took a little longer to launch than before.
This was the program re generating these files.

Versions 5 and 6 have a "Database" menu selection that allows you to
compress and reorganize the database (now, a "real" database and not "flat"
files - if you don't know what that means, don't worry about it - I'm just
showing off) at will. Version 3 may have a similar tool set or it is
possible that you did the exactly correct thing you'd need to check the
help file for that info.

Well thankyou for your efforts, much appreciated.
I'll check out V3 users in the forums at DPReview.com.

For what it's worth ... ACDSEE earlier ver 2.2
is freeware and available at
http://www.oldos.org/files/acdsee22win31.exe

I find the new versions quite bloated. Nothing comes close in
viewing speed to these 2.x versions. 2.43 is now being sold as "ACDSee
Classic". I use this one as my main viewer, and IrfanView when it
comes to save as PNG or things like that, which aren't featured in
ACDSee 2.43.
