Windows in not recognizing the shimgvw.dll file when attenpting to open photos. The system reverts to another viewer. This even happens when specifically prompted to open with the Windows viewer. The file is shimgvw.dll
I even had a copy of the file e-mailed to me and tried to replace the old one but no luck.

Your post has been here a while but no answer.
Maybe we don't quite get what the problem is.
First try the following:
Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press the Enter key.
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...

Now, right click on a photo and click on Open with on the opening menu. A
window will open. Click on Choose program. A window will open, select
Windows Picture and Fax viewer and click on the box "Always...."

I tried your suggestion of trying to run REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DL
WHEN i DO, i GET AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE SPECIFIED FILE. HOWEVER, THE FILE IS FOUND WHEN I DO A SEARCH.

Also try...

"regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and %)
