Some of the embedded images, when selected, can be acted upon with
drawing tools, others with image tools.
The drawing tools are different. I want to use image tools on all
images because they allow me to change the image, for example. The
ones that allow me to use only drawing tools are called "image
objects" and have a border like smartart shapes. I don't know how
these where created/inserted as I am working on someone else's
presentation.
Can I convert them to regular images so I can use the image tools?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice. This forum is very helpful.

It's quite easy, really.  After inserting the graphic (and finding that
it's not of the type you want), select it, press Ctrl+C to copy it then
choose Paste Special; that brings up a dialog box where you can choose
the type of graphic you want to paste.  Choose PNG.

That'll give you an image that lets you use the image tools.  You can
delete the original graphic.

Boring background detail beloved of geeks:

There are two distinctly different types of computer graphics.

The first type, vector or drawing images, are made up of mathematically
described rectangles, circles, lines and such.  You can select any of the
individual components and move or delete them or edit their
characteristics.

The second type, raster or bitmap or paint/photo images are made up of
colored dots (called pixels).  Even though there might be part of an
image that looks like a line, it's really just a line of dots; you can't
select and manipulate the line.

Each type of graphics is good for certain things, not so good for other
things.
