Can anyone suggest ways of stopping (or slowing) the blatant pilferage of
images from websites, other than by using the Digimarc system (which is far
too expensive for non-professionals)?

I don't know the Digimarc system but one way is to overlay some text on the
image such as:
Sample Only
or
Copyright Sitar Lal
or whatever you want.

Any reasonably decent image editor can do this. I think even Paint will do
it.

I have also seen some free programs out there that will do it in bulk. I
tried one, but I think it has a 30-day trial period
