Image processing

I`ve gone through books about vb.net looking for image processing
algorithms.

The few I`ve found (for sharpening, embossing, blurring etc.) works fine
but are very slow.

Anyone here know where to find info/suggestions/solutions on how to write
FAST image processing routines? Books? Links? Newsgroups?

I`m also interested in info about commercial components/libraries.

Any help (except suggestions about moving to C++/C#) will be greatly
appreciated.
