Does anyone know of a tool to write text oneo an image so that it
becomes a part of the image itself.

IrfanView can do it quick in a batch operation

Use
File | Batch Conversion
Check 'Use advanced options'
Set Advanced options
MISCELLANEOUS:
Check 'Add overlay text'
Settings
Set X, Y coordinates, set Width, Height
Write Text to be overlayed.
