does any1 know of any free software (windows or linux) that i can set
translucency on a gif so that i dont have to keep changing the background
of a gif to make it match the background of the webpage.

one thats quick and easy is preferable - even a program that only sets
translucency.

TIA

giftrans (CLI) does this. It was included with my linux distro
(mandrake) and you prolly already have it.

Look for /usr/bin/giftrans

There is a windows port (I think) but I don't have a link handy.

Name: giftrans
Version: 1.12.2-13mdk
Size: 21 KB

Summary: A program for making transparent GIFs from non-transparent
GIFs.

Description: Giftrans will convert an existing GIF87 file to GIF89
format. In other words, Giftrans can make one color in a .gif image
(normally the background) transparent.

Install the giftrans package if you need a quick, small, one-purpose
graphics program to make transparent .gifs out of existing .gifs.

Of course, The GIMP does this, but you asked for quick and easy.

GIF doesn't support translucency, it only supports
transparency. PNG supports translucency.

Giffy works like a charm, for converting bmps to transparent gifs, or
setting transparency on gifs. If you run the program directly, you can
choose the color to make transparent by clicking on the image. It also
adds a right-click context menu option to gifs and bmps, for super ease
of use. Find it here: http://www.emu8086.com/giffy/

instead of translucancy, i reduce contrast and brightness to get the same
use irfanview
