I recently upgraded to Photoshop CS-- don't know if that makes a difference-- but now, the compress/delete cropped areas of pictures button on the Picture toolbar doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

Best,
Allison

Photoshop doesn't have anything to do with PowerPoint, unless you mean that
you cropped the image in PS and want to compress it in PowerPoint. Can you
give more details on why you suspect PS?

Also, what do you mean by "doesn't work". That could mean a lot of things.
How do you know that it doesn't work?

I have this problem too. I know that it doesn't work because in a file with upwards of 100 images, compressing pictures to web/screen res and deleting cropped areas does nothing to the file size, and if I uncrop an image, it is still all there. It also doesn't ask me if I want this applied to all pictures--a sure sign it's not happening.

There is a reason it doesn't work. Reading in another post, compressing pictures does not work on pasted images. It only works on images that have been inserted using Insert>Picture.

The way I get pictures into this particular file is by creating Photo Albums from folders of images. Then I am able to see, copy & paste the pics I want, much faster than using Insert>Picture>From File.

Copying & pasting from an album was easier before XP (Ctrl-C & Ctrl-V). Now I have to Edit>Paste Special, then scroll down to Picture (JPEG) and click OK. That's the only way the picture can be cropped. In 2000 you were able to copy and paste more than 1 pic at a time. In XP they get pasted in as 1 uncroppable pic.

Photo Album inserts the images as fills in autoshapes and the crop tool is
not available. If you resize the image, you are really resizing an
autoshape and not cropping an image. You can test this by selecting a
picture in a photo album, right clicking it and selecting "Format
Autoshape". You'll see that the picture is in the Fill > Color box.

Thank you for the explanation. It's too bad it works that way. I don't remember PPT 2000 having that problem. Could be wrong.

Thank you Echo,

I tried the demo, customized it to my liking and it seems to work well. I'm going to try it on an actual job next week, and will go from there

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint

Hello,

If you (or anyone else reading this message) have suggestions for how to
make this easier to do in PowerPoint using it's Photo Album feature
(without having to resort to VBA or add-ins), don't forget to send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).

FYI, I've found in 2002, that pictures which are grouped with other objects
will not be compressed unless you ungroup the picture from everything else.
People often group pictures together, or with titles, or backgrounds, so this
can come up quite often. (identifying these in a large document is sometimes
hard, but at least you now know to look). Ungrouping will remove any
animation for that group.

Cheers

You're welcome, Rick. I think you'll find that IIW gives you more flexibility
than the Photo Album option.

I recognize this thread is old, but you're telling me that I need to spend
another $35 to get functionality that I got for free under PowerPoint 2000
(i.e., that ability to edit photo album pictures as pictures). Is this going
to get fixed, or do I need to blow away Office 2003 and reinstall 2000?

The photo album add-in for PPT 2000 works differently than the photo-album feature in PPT 2002 and 2003. If the new behavior causes problems for you, I'd recommend using a 3rd party product such as Shyam's Image Importer Wizard.

Is what going to get fixed? You mean the fact that Photo Album inserts images
into an autoshape? I dunno what's going to happen in the next version of PPT
with batch import/photo album. It may still do autoshapes, it may not. I do
know that both PPT 2002 and 2003 use the autoshapes, though.

But yeah, if you want to be able to edit a photo, then don't import it using
the Photo Album feature. If you don't want to spend more money (and I can
understand why you wouldn't want to), then use Insert/Picture/From File to
insert individual photos.

I'm not Microsoft, and I don't work for Microsoft. I'm a user just like you.
So don't be upset with me for explaining how the current Photo Album works
and what third-party add-ins will overcome this behavior.

Hi Allison000,

I am having bad luck too with Word 2002 "compress" feature. I have tried two
means: through File, Save As, Compress and through Format, Picture or Object,
Compress.

Have you heard from anyone on a "fix"? My colleagues are able to compress.

Thanks.

Maryba

Maryba, you've landed in the PowerPoint newsgroup. We have alternatives to
recommend to people when compress pictures doesn't work in PowerPoint, but I
don't know what to do when it doesn't work in Word. You might want to post in
one of the Word newsgroups.

http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx will get you to
the Office newsgroups.

That said, is it possible that your photos are already optimized? You'll
probably want to let the people in the Word group know which version of Word
you're working with and also what exactly you mean by "having bad luck."

Hi Echo,

Thanks for taking the time to let me know I landed in the wrong community.
"Any port in the storm," right?

I will be back with PP questions, I am sure.

Thanks again!

[I accidentally hit "Post" in my previous post before writing comments.] I
had the same problem as others in this thread. To solve it for myself, I
right-clicked on each image, clicked "ungroup", then OK. After that, the
compression worked okay. I found the file size was still not as small as if I
had inserted the images from my computer and then compressed them (vs.
copying & pasting them), but it did help.
