Dear group,

Here goes with another "burning" XP issue:

I'm not trying anything fancy: I just want to copy some family photos
(jpegs) to a CD. I'm using the builtin XP burner software.

Hardware:
Emachines PC
Samsung SW-248F CD-R/RW, latest firmware (R605, I believe)

Software:
OS: Windows XP SP2
Driver: Vendor: Microsoft, Version: The latest available via MSN
Update.

I pop in a blank CD, select the "copy files to cd" option, drag and
drop some images into the CD folder, then select the "copy files to
cd" option. The wizard takes me through a few dialogs, and, voila!, a
CD is written.

But when I try to open this CD in the self-same drive that it was
written on, The drive a) whirs briefly; b) thinks for a looonng (2-4
minutes) time; then pops up a "blank CD" folder. I tried this many
times, with differnt images, at many speeds. None of them are readable
on any of the other CD players in my house nor on the machine down at
the local photo shop.

NOW, HERE'S THE FUN PART: By accident, I pop one of the CDs into my
DVD player (same PC), and my images pop right up! If I look in the
properties dialog for the cd, Windows lists the filesystem as "CDFS".

I've been combing the groups and the web for days. I've seen a few
things that seem similar, but the threads just peter out without a
resolution. Any help for me? Before suggesting that I buy burner
software xyz, please help me understand what the problem is.

Thanks,

Larry Barnett

Might be worth trying a different brand of CDs.

Have a look at the following KB articles:

Group,

Following up. I'm still having this problem. CD-R data disks written
by the 248F on XP cannot be read except on a DVD drive.

Tried all of the following, without successs:

--Alternative media (verbatim blue)
--Slower (8x) write speed.
--Alternative burning software (Nero 6.x).

I'm now convinced that there's nothing "wrong" with the disks...they
are just being written in the wrong format to be read on a CD player.
I don't think I'll fix this problem unless I find a better device
driver or a discover a setting to tweak. Unfortunately, I don't think
either are likely to happen, given the quality (or lack thereof) of
Samsung/Microsoft product support.

In the meantime, I'll just have to invest in extra compactfash chips
to use for taking down to the photo store.

Thanks for the update.

If you find a solution, please share it with
this group.

Just a thought...maybe installing a new
CD-RW drive would solve the problem.
