image can't be removed from background

I have a square with a red x and a border, approximately 1/2" on my background screen that I can find no way to remove. It happened when I was learning to create a web page. I suspect it has something to do with putting in the buttons. Can anyone suggest a way to remove it?
 
Sounds like an active desktop item. Right Click your Desktop -> Properties -> Desktop Tab (???) Click WEBsomething.. & uncheck the boxes :)
