I'M trying to install W2k but my bios can't find the harddrive.

Hi all,

motherboard: Asus P5/A
cpu: AMD K2 450mhz
bios: latest version: 1.007

harddrive: WesternDigital 80Gb

I'm trying to install W2k but my bios can't find the harddrive.
I tried alternate jumper settings to make it a 32Gb drive, which my
bios can see.
Now I tried to install W2k onto the 32Gb partition but while the setup
is running, W2k will always format the whole drive (80Gb).
Even once I created a partition in the setup process with 32Gb, it
would format the whole drive.

Is there any chance to install W2k onto my drive?

I don't remember if a new BIOS for this board will give you more capacity or
not. However, the jumper is just there to "lie" to the BIOS because some
boards would lockup during boot if the drive was too big. If the board
doesn't support the drive, you then needed to run the overlay software. A
better option would be to get an add-in PCI IDE controller card. The price
on them is fairly low. The advantage of this over using the overlay software
is that it is more stable and will give better performance. The P5/A has an
ATA/33 interface, the new add-in card would be able to take full advantage
of your new drives ATA/100 interface and, YES, the difference is noticeable.

So at least, there is hope to be able to use the full drive.
I try to organize an add-in pci ide controller card now.

If the WD drive is the only device on the cable, try removing the jumper
altogether or moving it the null spot. On some WD drives, if they are the
only device on the cable, you can't set the jumper to master (or maybe CS) -
you need to remove it altogether or place it in the null spot, if there is
one.
