I went to start, ctrl panel and there is no performance & maintenance to
click on to get the PID (Product ID) number. How can I find out what the
number is?

Hi "Bee Vi",

Right click My Computer, click Properties - look about halfway down for a
number that is formatted like this: XXXXX-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX

For more complete information,
Click Start, click Run, type the 3-letter term CMD and press Enter.

Then select and copy next line:
systeminfo > "%UserProfile%\Desktop\MyInfo.txt"

and right click in Command Prompt window and click Paste
Then press enter. Wait until it finishes.
Type the 4-letter term EXIT and press Enter.

Look on your Desktop for the MyInfo.txt file.

(You're welcome. :)

there is a freeware called SIW
that can scan your system and
registry and provide you with
all the product id's installed.

it will also give you data on
the hardware your computer
has.

The OP doesn't state what flavor of XP has, but systeminfo is not available
in XP Home. The first method will work, though.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Does the XP Home CD have a tools folder
with utilities like systeminfo and tasklist?

It has a tools folder, but not those 2 tools. Here's the list from the
readme:

"Tools Documented But Not Installed In This Release
The following tools are documented in the Support Tools help file
(Suptools.chm) but are not installed in this release.

a.. DCDiag.exe
a.. Repadmin.exe

Tools Not Documented
The following tools install when the Complete checkbox is selected during
setup. However, these tools are not documented in a separate Help file. For
most command-line tools, you may type /? (for example, apmstat /?) at the
command prompt for syntax help.

a.. Activate.exe
a.. Apmstat.exe
a.. Bindiff.exe
a.. Browstat.exe
a.. Cabarc.exe
a.. Dsastat.exe
a.. Dupfinder.exe
a.. Extract.exe
a.. IpsecCmd.exe
a.. Ksetup.exe
a.. Ktpass.exe
a.. Ntfrsutil.exe
a.. Pviewer.exe
a.. Remote.exe
a.. Rsdiag.exe
a.. Setspn.exe
a.. Timezone.exe
a.. Tracefmt.exe
a.. Tracelog.exe
a.. Tracepdb.exe
a.. Vfi.exe
a.. Whoami.exe
a.. Wsremote.exe

The following tools install when the Complete checkbox is selected during
setup. However, the Help for these tools contains the Windows 2000 version
and is not included in Suptools.chm. The help for these tools can be
launched from the help menu option of the tools or it can also be launched
from the command line by typing the help file name directly.

a.. Apimon.exe -- Apimon.hlp
a.. Dskprobe.exe -- Dskprobe.hlp
a.. Windiff.exe -- Windiff.hlp"

The disk I have is an upgrade with SP3; maybe the full install disk has it,
but I wouldn't think so.
