I'm tired--usb external hard-drive

Please excuse my ignorance but I never used hard-drives besides the
default that came with computer. Never added another one and all that
stuff.

I picked up a 'cheapie' (by virtue of sale and rebate) Maxtor 60 gb
usb hard-drive. One of those SMALL things that are convenient. (few
inches,etc.)

I connected it to my laptop. Yet to figure it out but seems to work
AOK.

ok---follow me?

I save a ton of things on laptop hard-drive and hate for them to add
up where it takes forever to get them off. (photo's,etc.)

So at least save much of the stuff on usb hard-drive vs. the one
laptop.

Sorry---but my question?

I spend 57 years getting things OFF the laptop hard-drive to the 'usb
hard-drive AND it all comes back !!!! It might be nice to have this
duplication but if not wanted? Do I have something set-up wrong? By
coming back I mean if I ship everything from \mydocuments,etc. to
store on usb hard-drive the next day \mydocuments,etc. on laptop has
all the duplicate stuff back in it.

How are you moving items? A drag/drop will simply copy the files to the
external hard drive (expected behavior when dropping to another partition).

You could "move" and that will remove the local copy - however, I usually
recommend copying and, after confirming the file copy is complete, deleting
the originals. It's extra work but if something goes wrong during the
process it helps to avoid data loss.

If you are moving items (or copying and deleting) and getting duplicates,
check the local folders properties for "offline" settings. You want this
off.

"local" = the files and folders on the laptop.

Hi Sharon, <waves>
Where exactly are you sending the OP to check offline settings for local folders?
It's not clear to me, so it's probably not clear to him either. ;-) Right-clicking
a local folder (e.g. My Documents) does not show any "offline" settings that I see.

yep..I'm confused.... offline folders? offline settings? I 'right
click' and see no option as such.

I'll have to study this more. The usb hard-drive is loaded with some
software and it has a 'mind of it's own.

I believe what Sharon is referring to is here:

Click Start> Control Panel> Appearance and Themes> Folder Options
or if you use Classic view as I do:
Click Start> Control Panel> Folder Options

Click the Offline Files tab.

Uncheck the Enable Offline Files check box, and click OK.

If you don't see that and a bunch of other checkboxes, you have Simple File Sharing
enabled, and Offline Files will be off already.

Thanks, Glen! I was offline for a few days and, yes, this is what I was
referring to.
