I'm taking a poll - Are you running with UAC or have you disabled UAC?

Joseph Geretz

I'm taking a poll to get a sense of how my own experience corresponds to the
experience of others with Vista UAC. I will create two replies to this post;
one reply for I leave UAC enabled and another reply for I have disabled UAC.
If you will please reply to the appropriate branch, we'll be able to get a
sense of how the community in general relates to the new UAC feature in
Vista.

Thanks,

- Joseph Geretz -

If you leave UAC enabled, please repond to this branch.

Here.

I'd suggest moving this to the web. There are scads of free polling
sites.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
NOTICE: In-Newsgroup (and therefore off-topic) comments on my sig will
be cheerfully ignored, so don't waste our time.

I've used Linux so I'm used to being asked if I want to do what I've
just said I want to do.

I agree with Scott, NNTP is not really a good forum for polling type
questions. If such an online poll were setup, I would reply that I have UAC
enabled on my Vista install.

Just not as often. :0)

Disabled it as soon as I learned where it was at.

I left it on, on the GFs machine, because I'm mad at her right now :p

I do turn it on whenever I want to test a problem someone else is having.
But I don't go to the cool websites or download warez, so I don't have
problems with malware or viruses like so many other people seem to. Plus I'm
a all-knowing Admin type. I'll take my chances with destroying the universe
by an accidental click

I'll admit there are more mouse clicks to get where you are going but
it is a safety net for me. I have been computing for about 15 years
and I do have a few ocassions over the years I would have been saved
from a thoughtless mouse click had that feature been there.

UAC enabled... but I'm a developer and I have to get my software working
with UAC as the majority of the corporate desktops that my product will
deploy to will probably have UAC enabled.

Right now I have it disabled, because I can't get our application installed
with it enabled.

BTW, who decides exactly what operations require elevated privileges? Is
there a list somewhere?

Mine is enabled - AFTER I set the machine up the way I wanted it

TBH it seems about the same. Apart from games such as Battlefield 2,
everything I run has been properly written as they should be, i.e don't
need to be an Administrator, so they don't ask.

Complain to whoever wrote it. Ask them to justify needing to be run as
Administrator.

Anything which makes system changes or requires elevated permissions to
run.

Enabled.
Once the installation and setup of programs and drivers finished, I rarely
see UAC.

Unfortunately UAC got a largely unfair reputation from the beta days.
"But it is a Beta" very much applies when it comes to UAC in the Vista Beta.
UAC continuously got better as the Beta progressed.
Earlier UAC was always coming up it seems for almost anything.
Now with RTM, UAC is far more refined, able to work properly and only shows
itself at appropriate times.

UAC behavior in any of the Betas is not a reasonable view of Vista.
If you have not tried UAC enabled with RTM or after you finished customizing
the computer, try it and see the difference.
