Here's my system:
Compaq Presario SR2180NX with Vista Home Premium. My internet connection is
Optimum online and my ISP is AT&T. Whenever I try to start Windows Mail I get
the following message:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'postoffice.worldnet.att.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F

When I was using dial-up it worked fine. Now I'm using broadband and
everything has taken two leaps backwards. Any ideas?

First thing, I suggest phoning ATT support.

Just to clarify, are you saying that you used to have a dial-up connection
through AT&T and you now have a broadband connection through Optimum OnLine?
If so, then Optimum OnLine is now your ISP. Are you maintaining and
continuing to pay for your AT&T account as well? If so, why? Other than a
desire to hold onto your old att.net email address, there is no reason to
pay both of these providers.

On the other hand, presuming that you have cancelled your AT&T service, it's
not unexpected that you would not be able to connect to their mail servers.
:)

If I had to guess, I would say that you cancelled your AT&T service but
neglected to adjust your mail account settings accordingly.

First check your settings to make sure they are correct under Tools |
Accounts | Mail | Properties | Connection. If that is correct then try
this:
See if this fixes it:

1. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program titled cmd
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotatioin marks
5. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
6. If nothing changes, reenable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

I just had my Windows mail set up last night with Vista. sbcglobal tech
talked me thru the whole thing, everything checked out. But when I try to use
it, I get the same message. I'm tired of talking to the techs, but don't
know what else to do!

I use sbcglobal.net and have a home network with laptop and another dell, do
you have a net work set up? if so I may be able to help.

Thank you so much for responding. Now, I really feel 'STUPID'. Went back in
to check out the account settings, and found a typo that I made. Corrected
it, and everything is great now. Duh!! Who knew. Thanx
