Try http://www.silentpcreview.com/ they review power supplies fans etc. If
you want dead silent you're going to have to pay for it, the extreme being
this zalman case http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20040115/index.html.

A more modest way to silence your PC would be to use something with a large
heatsink like one of the Zalman ones. If you're not a gamer look at getting
a video card without a fan on it. Buy a hard drive with fluid dynamic
bearings. And of course a quiet power supply.

Why do you need it to be on while you sleep?
This was going to be my question too. Put it in another room or turn the
sucker off while you sleep.
The world does not stop spinning if your computer is off.

Hi,

Do some research... there are some good sites around.

Key things: If you want a quiet PC build it from quiet parts - don't try and
make it quiet after, but do improve it after.
IE quietest drives, PSU, CPU fan. Don't get a whirlly gig graphics with a
hooer of a fan if you only need 2D graphics - get one without a fan
altogether. Choose your mobo on the basis of not having a nortbridge fan.
Use terminal server....

Zalman flower CPU coolers are good if on low speed. Zalman also make a quiet
PSU.
Consider water cooling & eliminate the CPU fan.

I have tried various acoustic insulation with varying success: some say the
best is the rubber used for printers stamps (?).

FYI: Why quiet for me? I work yonks of hours and live in a very quiet
place - up the side of a mountain - the noisiest thing is usually birds
twittering or butterflies zooming around on the balcony chasing moths. Oh
and my girlfriend :) A wizzing fan is deafening in this environment.

Also consider underclocking your mobo when you want really really quiet.
