I'm kind of dumb about this stuff

I have to do a repair install (I read up on Google how to do this) A guy at the bar told me I should save SP1 so I don't have to download all the Windows Updates over again.(56K modem)
So I have 56 things saved on a cd-r. SP1 and I assume the other 55 things are updates, hotfixes and maybe log files or some other pertinent stuff.
Finally to my question.....after the install I copy all this stuff into the C:\Windows folder. Now do I now have to manually click in turn each of the 56 folders open and double click an .exe file?
Obviously I've never done this kind of thing before.
Any help would be appreciated.

Where did you find these "56 things" you saved to CD-R?

Thanks for getting back so quickly Harry. I found them in the C:\Windows folder. They are titled uninstallK******
uninstallQ****** and a large 204MB file called $NtServicePackUninstall$

Uninstall is there to put things back to the way they were before they were installed.

You need to download the files again.

Those files are the backup files that Windows Update Site creates when it
installs a new Hotfix. They are not useful to you in terms of transferring
to another system. You will need to download the hotfixes again. If someone
you know has a fast connection and CD Burner they can download most of the
hotfixes from here for you

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true Just
select your version of XP and then Critical Updates. Remember to only
download what you need. For example you should have Security fixes but you
would not need non English language pack items (unless you use another
language)

Download SP1a by clicking the "Go" button here

Thanks for the great info Harry. Please stick with me. Tomorrow I'll download and burn a cd at a buddies before the football games. Last question...How do I install them? Do they have to be put in a specific folder then executed?
I said I was dumb about this and I guess I'm proving it. [grin]
Thanks again,

Hi Sonny. The downloads are .exe files and will self-install to the correct
locations when you run them. Just run them one at a time starting with SP1a
and if prompted to reboot make certain that you do. You should also ensure
that you run defrag after you finish installing the lot.

Thanks for all you do Harry. Your instructions have helped me immensely as I now go forth with confidence instead of trepidation.
Take care and Happy Holidays.
