i am very satisfied with RC2. Most of my issues were easily resolved by
writing here and getting answers. I find it much easier to navigate and
faster than XP. Yeah, some of my software that I had is not compatible, but
it's stuff that I rarely used or that had alternative software I could
download.

I know this newsgroup is mainly being used for problem solving and issues,
but thought I'd let ya'll know that there's at least one (1) happy beta
user!

Judy

I agree Judy. Other than issue with flip 3d rc2 I am very happy with Windows
Vista RC2. Like you, the incompatible software is mostly older software that
you don't need anyway. Make that 2 happy beta users...

HI Judy, contrary to popular belief, this group is not just about
discussing problems with Vista. Its about any discussion relating to Vista.
My experience relates to yours. I have had every beta release of Vista
(aside from the in-betweens for MSDN subs only) and each release has been
faster than the one before. I have had no real problems with it (apart from
a coupl eof driver issues) and my programs work. Although I don't use alot
of programs. Because I do often beta programs, I keep myself to a minimum
of what I need to run.

Hi Judy,
Make that 3 happy RC2 Testers. I too am very happy with Windows Vista RC2!
Most everything seems to be working great and in most ways faster than XP. I
have now turned into a Vista fan which I was not after Beta 2.

great to hear becky! I on the other hand am a graphic and web designer so
it's important that I'm able to access all my editors & graphic
proggies....no problems with PS or Corel stuff and all my editors work
without a hitch! But in reality I'm just a little "chip head" like the rest
of the folks here! I'm all about beta (an all over it!)

happy sunday,

Judy

Michael,
The last time I did at clean install of XP was last week. I am a help desk
support technician at a local college and I ran XP side by side with Vista
and Vista booted and loaded programs faster on the same hardware
configuration.

I'm happy that you're happy. Now that the euphoria is over what, besides
the new draconian anti piracy (read customers) "features" and the new
eye candy, makes HastaLaVista any better than XP Pro for your average
end user?

Thanks,

Alias

I think its important for designers to keep abreast with the latest
operating systems. Especially when it comes to web designing. You have to
make sure your pages work with IE7 and so on.
I however have no excuse, I am just a chip-head. LOL

one (1) happy beta

holy mackerel!

Are you on drugs or something? Is this the same vista RC2 I am using? You
cant be for real....
and what is worse some people in here agree with you! Mass hysteria and
hallucinations!

Well make that another happy user. Though for the first time in a lot of
beta testing I didn't do a clean install as I got tiered of re-adding in 20
or so email accounts on each rebuild. I just did a full back up and then
upgraded from RC1 to RC 2 and after a little over 3 1/2 hours it was done!

(Well that really was the second attempt as the first time the only "error"
was mine because after checking the md5 hash on the downloaded file whcih
was fine I didn't check the md5 hash of the first DVD I burnt and of course
I got an 0x80070017 error on the upgrade. After reburning a DVD and checking
that it was good the second attemp went fine as described above... )

Seems very stable so far but I haven't had any real stablity problems for 3
or 4 builds.

The only issue I've got is with HP not having a scanner driver for the
all-in-one printer I use on this machine. ( I have others but they're on the
other side of the house and I might get too much exersie walking over :)
Though from reading CNN I think HP might have other priorities other than
getting beta drivers ready for early addopters!

yep, so far no problems. tested on about 7 sites I master...all open with
frontpage (2003) and dreamweaver...no prob! It's great to have the speed
too whey you are up/down loading graphics....now if I can only get a T1/T3
to my house I'd be in heaven! switched from cable to dsl due to cables cap
on packet sizes and other stooooopid limitations they put on their users.
dislike that they advertise a dl speed then limit it! I'll stick with a
dedicated line like ADSL ty very much!

personally, for the home user and non advanced windows users it's so much
easier to navigate. the builtin assistance is superior to XP and I'm even
using their security which I've never ever ever ever done before. I'm truly
impressed with the upgrade in their security features.

Believe Scott.

I have the same evidence on my computer. Things just load up faster, as per
my stopwatch. Boot to desktop is much faster also.

RC2, 5744 is a very good build. I have not had many problems with it at all.

The only conditions remaining are the modem (not important as I have DSL)
and an unknown (to the system, not me - it is my USB webcam) device that has
not loaded due to lack of drivers. I know from previous builds that I can
use the Windows XP drivers for the modem, should I choose to do so.

The webcam drivers I will have to wait for.

I don't find XP hard to navigate. Can you be more specific with "with
Vista you can do this but with XP you can't"?
the builtin assistance is superior to XP

Again, can you be more specific?

What is different that isn't available in XP or from third party
programs like Ad-Aware SE, Spywareblaster, Spywareguard, CWShredder and
Spybot?

RC2's been more buggy for me personally than the RC1'a or beta2, but thats
what testings all about. Small anoying bugs such as wont power off, restart
etc and Nvidia needs to release a new driver.

I wouldn't say it boots noticebly quicker than XP, it logs in a lot quicker
but that's because all the antispyware stuff etc I had running under XP is
not running under Vista.

As to whether I'm happy with it, cant say either way really. I tried Vista
so that I could connect my xbox 360 to my PC and stream video, but I don't
think I would fork out the money for the media center editions just for this
luxury.

There's nothing else really that makes me think I must get Vista when it
comes out. It's not that I'm unhappy with it, I'm not. It's just that
there's nothing really at the moment that I want to do on Vista that I cant
do in XP. Ini future months when good games come out that start making use
of the new DX capabilities and graphics cards to support this get at a
reasonable price, then yes I will want to upgrade.

The biggest issue that needs to be sorted out for me with Vista is the new
way they do sound. The Vista audio architecture disables DirectSound 3D
hardware acceleration, so unless an XP game uses OpenAL, under Vista I have
no way of getting surround sound, hardware acceleration and EAX. Having a
expensive X-FI Fatal1ty sound card that cant (driver issues asside) function
properly under Vista doesn't encourage me to upgrade.

But sound issues asside, I do think Vista is a step in the right direction,
however just as 99% of my friends disable their firewalls/virus checkers
when their firewalls/virus checkers are trying to do their jobs, as they're
correctly trying to stop my friends downloading virus ridden progs, I see the
average home user getting in the habbit of running everything as
adminisrtrator and turning UAC off.
