Just downloaded IE and every time I go to google, I getting hit
with the ads. IE is also very slow--and I can't see where to
increase memory. I trashed it and downloaded a fresh install.
The ads were back. I never had this problem on 9.1 or
with the earlier version of I.E. I would appreciate any advice
you have to offer. Thanks.

Download Avant Browser from Tucows and it will stop your problem with the
built in Pop Up Blocker. It is an addon for IE that gives the features that
Microsoft forgot to give it's users. It's coming in Service Pack 2.

I use the free Pop-up Stopper. Also, if using an NT based O/S, I disable
the Messenger Service as it can be exploited by pop-up advertisement.

In addition, I scan the machine with free Ad-aware on a routine basis to
clean the crap that does reach the machine. Also, I use an AV that finds
AD Trojans and scan on a routine basis helps.

I implement the Host as a prevention measure to help keep things at bay.

Lastly, I go to IE and configure it as little bit to not just let things
happen, like running *unsigned* ActiveX scripts and a couple of other
settings, which can be found using Google on *securing Internet
Explorer*.

You might consider going to mozilla.org and downloading either Mozilla or
FireFox since these browsers block pop ups if you want them to.

Why would you want to add a shell to an already insecure browser? The
insecurities are still under there.

Go get Mozilla, Firefox, or Opera. And practice Safe Hex.

Sounds like you have more problems than just popups.

If you went through the trouble of downloading IE, then I would recommend
that you also download Mozilla from www.mozilla.org . It is a much more
secure bowser than IE and has build in pop-up blocking.

If your getting pop-ups on Google.com then you definitely have some ad
server Malware running in the background.

Download AdAware and scan your system:

There are other ways of finding and removing them manually, but AdAware
is just easier (and faster) for newbies.

Of coarse after I posted this I notice she was using a OSX...

I still think it's some sort of Malware that's loaded with IE...
But for the life of me I can't think of one program that would
remove it on a Mac. Any suggestions?

Why would you run a "secure" browser on a MS OS then?

Mitigation perhaps?

I'll do it, Steve. Thanks!

Thanks Tech, I didn't even get to where you saw I'm on OSX--went
to the page to download and came back to check. The darn ads have
rendered Google unusable. I appreciate your help and will read
further.

I am totally confused, at this point. Is it something that was
in the IE software that I downloaded or did someone send me
something. I'll try all these solutions, if necessary. Thank
you, everyone, for your suggestions. Let's hope I'm not back to
ask more advice!

Thank you, again, to all. Mozilla seems to have done the
trick--even have my old bookmarks imported. Phew! I need to
read up on exactly what happened--and what is to blame for
allowing the pop ups. In as much as I've never had the problem,
before, I haven't really paid much attention to it. What a pain!

Kati

When you say pop-up adds, do you mean ones which are headed 'messenger
service' in a grey window which appears 'floating' as it were, in front
of your web browser window?

If that is the case then they are most likely to be 'messenger spam' and
are independent of the web browser (you just get them because you are
connected to the Internet - and therefore most likely have a browser
window open.

If that is the case then you'd be better off using personal firewall
software to block the ports it uses

Once you start using Mozilla, you may never want to go back to IE. Once and
a while, a website may not display properly, but overall, the added features
of Mozilla have IE beat!

I have already dumped IE, after the pop experience. I do
appreciate the advice, very much.

No I get a warning, first, then every time I click to close one,
another pops up.

It seemed to start when I downloaded the last update to I.E.
Lost me some work time this morning--that's for sure.

I have a personal firewall (Norton), however I notice it shuts my
system firewall off.

I will definitely look at these sites, as I'd like to try to
understand what happened. Thank you for the pointers.

It appeared to me that these were CP sites--am I wrong?

No, because a large portion of my work involves Visual FoxPro, and
there is not a Linux version.

:O) Okay.

It is just that I wondered because I use 'Proxomitron' as a
Band-Aid for IE and 'MailWasher' as a Band-Aid for OE
and feel that it does mitigate the threat somewhat. True, the
insecurities are still there, but they are not as likely to get
exploited.

Ok. Why not use Mozilla, or Firefox/Thunderbird, and eliminate the
threat altogether? Maybe Opera, tho I personally have not used Opera's
mail client.
