Just (partially) installed a Canon MP530, love how clicking in an ink
cartridge turns on a red LED that shines *through* the cartridge!
Kind of like blue cruising lights on low-riders.

Printing and copying work fine, needed longer cables to do the phone
install, hope it coexists properly with an answering machine.

You do realize that these added "Christmas lights" and memory chip add
about $5 to $6 per cartridge to your cost, or about $25-30 more than for
a set of cartridges for the previous model printer without the pretty
lights and chip. These "improvements" were all done for company profit
as they were entirely unnecessary. I have two of these previous printers,
so I would know.

that is a blantant lie. the difference in cost between the carts for
the ip4000 and the ip4200 is about $2.00.

I keep forgetting you live in a foreign country! :-) No, I'm not lying.
It's all relative to what country and store you buy them. My figures
were Costco Canada online (since they are not sold at their stores).

At Costco Canada you have to buy in multiple sets (2 for each color)
and a set of 3 for the black. That comes to $315 dollars Canadian
(shipping included with the online price, taxes added). Or in other
words, approx. $24 per cartridge. $120 for a set of five.

Sad news for you - for $120 I can refill 24 times using refill ink!

A new Canon iP4200 printer (with free cartridges!) can be had for $129.

Let's see... I refill with a kit from HobbiColors for about $1 per
cartridge. If each of us used 24 sets of cartridges, it would cost me
but $120 and you, $2,800 (Canadian Dollars).

Maybe I missed something. Tell me again why I would prefer to hand over
$2,800 to Canon instead?

I care what goes on in the USA and the difference is small. you are
paying taxes to the government.

that is the tax your government charges

I didn't look but presume the light is in the printer not the
cartridge?

I'm sure the printer could have been $10 cheaper without the lights,
$20 cheaper without the chipped carts, but, well, this is light duty,
unless the nephew comes and runs us dry printing trading card pages,
the carts will be replaced about once a year, with 50% or more of the
ink having gone to cleaning cycles. So, maybe $80/year for ink,
$30/year for paper, $40/year straight-line depreciation on the unit,
maybe $10/year for electricity, ...

And I get a chuckle every time I see the lights, that has to be worth
a few bucks a year!

Should have got the MP780 last year, I know, but it did cost $60/more,
so, er, whatever.

One feature it does not seem to have is the "auto-on" feature of the
i550. OK, you may not want your AOI to "auto-off" but that could be a
setting.

It also apparently self-aligns, prints a page, senses the results, and
adjusts itself accordingly. That is what's going on, isn't it?
Sweet.

This is one of those cases where Taliesyn is probally right for his
region, and Measekite's info is sadly out of date. First of all I have
no idea where to get the ip4200. the ip4200 is being replaced by the
ip4300. The ip5200 I believe, I don't know, but I believe is being
abondoned.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=117&modelid=13528

So, the fact that it's simply not on sale except for closeout and
surplus, you can't exactly put an exact price on it.

The cartridges, I will presently have to say, do cost $10 more per set
at office depot, so at this store the price is $2.00/unit on average.
However, the old cartridges were close to $53 at costco if you buy
tri-packs, which IIRC they did at least offer a cyan/magenta/yellow
pack. That's $4.00 more than costco.

Costcos cli-8s might be $17.80 each, i'm unsure as it's not clear
whether it's a single pack, or a double pack. That's well over $7.00
more per unit iif that's the right price, though i'll have to double
check my local costco.

Measekite as always is full of shit.

I can't agree that the cartridges cost more because of the chips and
leds, I have to say they cost more because canon wants them to cost
more, they cost 1/2 what they do in japan as they do here.

Well, since you claim to be a Witch, getting around Canon's copy protection
system shouldn't present you with any problems.....
