illegal operation error

after surfin the net i had to go eat dinner so i shut off
the computer when i was done and excused and turned the
computer back on when i want to internet explorer 6.0 it
said
"explorer has performed an illegal operation and will be
closed down"

"if the problem persists please contact the program
vendor"

so i am here please help me i have a windows 98 an anti-
virus program a firewall

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
