You'll find that Ilford's Smooth Pearl will look/perform better wihth i850
than the Classic Pearl. Use the Photo Paper Pro setting in your driver.

Hi

I just got a Canon i850 and am trying out different papers. Has anyone
worked out any settings for Ilford Galerie classic Gloss. Ilford recommends
paper type as "High Gloss Photo Film" but the Canon driver won't do
borderless printing with that setting. I have tried several other settings
but not hit on anything really satisfactory yet.

I find the "Photo Paper Pro" setting works great on Epson Photo Paper
and a generic high gloss paper I buy on eBay. Have you tried this
setting?

Did you custom setting for resolution by the way?
Select your paper type then go into custom mode and you will then see
a fine adjustment slider. It makes a big diffrence over the preset
high selection. The driver is a bit funny as you change paper types,
plain paper slider wont have any adjustment until after selecting
another paper then going back to plain.

Probably because plain paper simply cannot absorb the extra ink output
as can the specialty papers. You have probably noticed how wet a printed
sheet is when it comes out of the printer in standard mode.

With the s820, I found that the 'Glossy photo paper' setting worked
almost as well as the 'High Gloss Photo Film', and also allows
borderless. Make sure you select the maximum resolution.

Regarding smooth versus classic, my understanding is that classic has
much longer life than the smooth. Make sure you allow lots of drying
time with the classic paper (like a day or two). If you stack them up
too soon, your prints will stick to each other.
