I had the IL Divo CD as a xmas present today. I've tried to play it with (a)
My Media Source Player, (b) Windows Media Player and (c) the player that
came on the CD. None of them will play it. The error says that XP cannot
open the audio files. Browsing the disk, I cannot see where the tracks are.
It just has a 'player' directory, a text file defining the name and type of
tracks and other gumph.
It plays ok on an ordinary stereo system. However I play my music on my
Audigy 5:1 system
I'm very narked about this. Can anyone help?
TIA
Regards
Sheri

Have a look at the fine print on the back of the CD case. That CD has
some form of copy-protection, possibly Macrovision:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news2.php?ID=10374 You may have allowed the CD to
install this anti-ripping software on your system, and it probably gave
you no alternative. Unfortunately there are reports that this sort of
software can screw things up for users, so that they can't even play the
CD. I haven't had much personal experience with copy-protected CDs but I
do know that each of these systems can be defeated. One of the easier
ways- try this- is to hold down the Shift key as you insert the CD,
thereby halting the auto-run.

I think that if I were in your situation, I'd work on figuring out how to
rip the tracks to my hard drive, and then return the CD to the store as
"defective." Even if you decide to keep the CD, you might find it easier
to play "ripped" tracks rather than hassle with this Macrovision crap
every time you want to listen to IL Divo. Exact Audio Copy (freeware) is
apparently quite good for this: http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/ My brother
swears by a program which is not freeware, but has allowed him to copy
every protected CD he's come across: http://www.alcohol-soft.com/ (30 day
free trial available.)

Good luck, and Merry Christmas.

Thanks Ioniser for your recommendations. I'll try that s/w

This is a DVD right?

Make sure that the areas are setup correctly it Should be setup to Area 2 i
believe for the UK etc....

or try running it in a normal player as your description as below is telling
me that the CD is actually faulty and the DVD has not been burned correctly.

Probably best to check in a normal DVD 1st before you play with the PC
setting.

No. It was an ordinary music CD brought legitimately from Virgin Megastore
in the UK
