IIS install failed: Snap-in failed to initialize: NNTP Protocol

Windows XP Pro with .NET 1.1 and VS.NET

Trying to install IIS - it says successful install but
when I open MMC and click on Services --> IIS, I keep on
getting the following error:

TITLE: Microsoft Management Console

Snap-in failed to initialize.
Name: NNTP Protocol
CLSID: {DC147890-91C2-11D0-8955-00AA00A7BF42}

I have tried multiple installs, reinstalls of IIS; of
VS.NET and .NET FRAMEWORK a number of times (with multiple
reboots in different permutations), all to no avail.

Does it involve some registry business? Please help if you
can...
