IIS does not start and terminates with errors

Hi Phillip

Many thanks for the analysis.

Sorry for the confusion I have two adapters on the notebook one is
configured to get the IP from DHCP the other does not have any IP to
it.

I tried assigning the web site the address the workstation got from
DHCP it does not work then I tried using the localhost address of
127.0.0.1 and even that does not work.

After installing IIS from Win 2000 professional CD I applied SP4
thinking it might fix the problem.

Please clarify what is going wrong.

Reply your messages under its group, please!

also send a copy of your message to the following group:
microsoft.public.inetserver.iis
first, configure an static ip for your network adapter
then set your web server to use that ip on port 80 and make sure
that port 80 is not used by another program (like Yahoo Messenger or
any other web server)
if your iis root directory is on a NTFS partition make sure that access of
root directory configured carefully
make sure that your web server allowed anonymouse access and your ip
or computer name are not configured as restrict on your web server
make sure about proxy configuration on your browser, you must disable
proxy configuration on your browser to view your local web server
make sure that there is a default page on your root directory (default.htm
or asp for IIS)

and there are many other things which cause error !!!

describe your situation clearly please!
and say that what is the error no. wich you received? 404 page not found ?
500 internal server error? what no. ?
or your iis can't start?!!! describe please!

You say "terminates." I see nothing in your post that says the IISAdmin service "terminated." What exactly is your error message when accessing this link:

http://localhost

with IIS running of course.

Please let me know where to find the log files there is no Inetpub
folder itself in the first place.

My win2k professional is already at SP4 and it wants me to insert the
install CD to install IIS I do that and later I update SP4 and still
it fails to start.

On another Win2K workstation all I did was just install SP4 and later
choose for IIS 5 install it did not ask me for the original CD and IIS
works fine on that test workstation and it does not start on the other
on which I desperately need it.

Please help.

If there is no inetpub folder then IIS is not installed and running as
inetpub is created as the default location fo ryour web sites. Use the add
programs, install windows components, to uninstall then install IIS. The
service should start automatically once installed.
 
IIS log files are NOT stored in Inetpub. Normally they are in C:\WINNT\system32\logfiles folders under that. So we
have an issue that Windows 2000 wants the CD-ROM when trying to install the IISAdmin services such as WWW;
SMTP; and so on. That's how it should be.

Your othe explanation of how things went installing IIS services in Windows 2000 really cannot happen that way. SP4
has nothing to do with this issue. I know the working one it may have seemed you had to do nothing but install SP4 but
believe me more was done that you are unaware of.

Tell me what you have here in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC

You can just export it and open the reg file with Notepad select all copy paste here.
