hi - I am getting this strange action.

On first signing on to Windows 2000 workstation it will dial up the internet and after a bit of to and fro burst open a box saying "Ignore Call" After pressing the button the line is dropped.

This can happen as well at random when using the internet - and it will force the line to be dropped.

I am fairly sure it is not a virus and worm - the latest verion of McAvee is loaded. Also doing [Ctrl][Alt][Del] while the action is happening does not show any program running - and the services look to be Windows ones

I took off the service 'telephony' which cured the dial out but would not let me use the internet dialler either.

I suspect it may have something to do with automatic updating as this does not seem to be working as the help text says it should. I am familiar with XP updating but not Windows 2000. Another possibility is it is some kind of voip service - but I have no idea what!

ta anyone who can help

Also try to scan your computer for spyware. This is usually the cause
for spontaneous dialups to the internet.
Try Spybot - Search and Destroy and/or Lavasoft Ad-aware. Although
virusscanners are already more and more checking for spyware they are
not nearly as advanced as current spyware checking tools.

You can check if Windows update is enabled by going to:
System properties --> Automatic updates.
There's a checkbox there that says: "Keep my computer up to date".
Try disabling this option and see if you still get random dialouts to
the internet. If not then this could also be the problem (but don't
rule out spyware just yet). I do recommend keeping updated with the
latest Microsoft patches but you can also do this manually by using
Windows Update.

ta for the reply - will follow this up.

What is throwing me is the message 'Ignore Call' looks like a genuine Windows message - as though some in coming voice call has been ignored. Is there some voip setting that I can turn off as well as the other ideas given above?

again any replies appreciated as there is little to reference what is going on. I can not find for example any reference to the above error message - so I wonder if anyone else has seen it!

Hm, that almost looks as though the telephone line is connected to
both your phone and the modem. It might be that the modem is picking
up the signal sooner than your modem. Since dialin shouldn't be
enabled it drops the call. But you should hear the phone ring when
that happens and you would probably guess that it would have something
to do with that so I guess that would not be the case.
I don't have a clue what that message could be. I don't know anything
about voIP so maybe that could have something to do with it.
