If there is another delay in the final release of Vista and it goes past May 31, 2007, do you think Microsoft will issue a patch to all those who will be running either Beta 2 or RC 1 so that they will not be stuck with an OS that stops working at that time?

William

No.

William;
It is impossible to know what Microsoft may do.
My guess if the delay happens:
There will be no patches at all to extend the life.
Certainly no patch for an older version such as current builds.
Those users will need to install a later build.

But future releases would take that into account and have an appropriate
expiration date.
I am sure a build released in May will have a life longer than the end of
the month.
I would be very suprised if any delay would go past that date.

If there is another delay, and Vista can't be delivered in May, or June, or July, I think there will probably be an RC2 and maybe even an RC3, but Beta 2 and RC1 will not be extended.

Remember Uncle Microsoft didn't give you free software, you are supposed to be testing it. They are not going to extend what will by then be superceded and outdated test software.

If you are using Beta 2 as your production operating system, and hope to be able to transition it to RC1 and then to the Release version, you are probably going to get yourself in a lot of trouble, and unless you are doing a lot of backing up, you have a very good chance of loosing your data.

I think thats a "Yes", "No", "Maybe"

My 2p

MSFT will kick Vista out of the door ready or not on 31st May and
patch it in use. I can't see them putting it back again come hell or
high water, only legal issues like the EU Antitrust thing and the PDF
thing and possibly the WGA Class action thing will maybe force any
further delays (or more concievably give them an excuse to delay
further) in which case its entirely up to MSFT weather or not they
extend the Beta license period, they probably will.

It will go out in Q1 2007. Redmond has already locked down the feature set
and are going hard to get it ready to go. Any new features being worked on
are going towards the next Windows, Vienna.

Go on then give me odds on Vista launching Q1 2007.
I am betting May 2007

Microsoft Japan announced today (repeated by ZDNews) that January remains
the time for General Availability of Vista.

OK Colin, we shall see in due course.

I am skeptical about a Q1 launch, I never believe anything I am told
by people with vested interests, its all spin and propaganda. When
Vista hits the shelves ready to go then I will believe it.

Jonah

I agree. I just think that they are going to make it. They have already
locked down the feature set and are going hard to debug, etc.
