If saved as word2003 it won't send it

Each time I save a document for previous word version (i.e. for word 2003)
when I email it using Windows Mail, I get this message "some of the
attachements won't be sent, send the message anyway?". If I choose YES then
the message is sent but without attachements.

Do you know why?

Do you close the document in Word first?

Yes, even when I close word and send the attachements they won't be sent.
When I open them I can see the files but when I mail them it won't do it...
